[12:08] < MS-> Reading the odd discussion the other day about lecturers & textbooks, I find it very strange

[12:09] < MS-> This in particular:

[12:09] < MS-> "there should be rules against lecturers setting their own textbooks as required reading"

[12:09] < MS-> But that's because our lecturers did do this - ie have textbooks as required reading which they wrote

[12:10] < MS-> but it misses they did that

[12:10] < MS-> In our case is was because they basically wrote the slides for the course, and the notes and realised if they did it as a full book of notes they could go into more detail

[12:11] < MS-> ie the aim was better teaching

[12:11] < MS-> rather than pushing a personal agenda

[12:11] < vmlemon_> Sounds interesting

[12:11] < MS-> Also, they covered the issue of royalties from the books

[12:11] < MS-> and it sounds like basically there's bugger all royalties from academic books

[12:12] < MS-> and if people had major issues from that perspective they made sure that there were large numbers of the books in the library instead

[12:12] < MS-> or as well

[12:12] < MS-> It also meant that rather than saying "these 5 books are all required reading"

[12:12] < MS-> which they did for our databases course

[12:13] < MS-> for later years, they said "these bits are required reading"

[12:13] < MS-> and for later years distilled the appropriate bits and put more explanation in

[12:14] < MS-> oh I note elvum agrees later on :)
